About Sue Schirmer

I have dedicated my career to supporting students, educators, school counselors, and leaders as they navigate the ever-changing landscape of education. I know firsthand how rewarding—and how challenging—this work can be. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to help others build strong, high-functioning teams, develop systems for postsecondary success, and create environments where both students have and educators thrive.

I have had the privilege of collaborating with hundreds of schools and districts as a Professional Learning and Leadership Consultant at Heartland AEA. In this role, I provide training, coaching, and strategic support for school counseling programs, postsecondary planning, and educational leadership. Additionally, I have served as a faculty member at Drake University, Buena Vista University, and Iowa College Aid, where I guided and mentored the next generation of educators and counselors. Prior to that, I was a Secondary Language Arts teacher, K-12 School Counselor, and Teacher/Counselor for an alternative school.

My work spans individuals, teams, and entire systems. As a Certified Thinking Collaborative Cognitive Coaching℠ Training Associate and Mentor, Cognitive Coaching℠ is not just a methodology I employ—it is integral to who I am. I am passionate about helping individuals develop efficacy, collaboration, communication, and leadership skills. I find great fulfillment in witnessing the ripple effect that occurs when strong leaders empower their teams to thrive.

I am honored to have received Iowa’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the Advocate of the Year Award from the Iowa School Counselor Association. My commitment to education extends to serving on multiple statewide advisory boards and task forces. However, the most meaningful moments of my career come from helping educators rediscover their purpose, guiding schools through meaningful change, and supporting counselors in making a lasting impact on their students.

And then, there are the flamingos.

I’ve collected them for years, but they’ve come to represent something much deeper for me. Flamingos are resilient, adaptable, and deeply social birds—they don’t make their long migrations alone. They rely on the wisdom of those who have traveled the path before, adjusting their journey while staying focused on where they need to go. That’s how I see my role in education: guiding those who are leading the way, helping educators, teams, and systems adapt, grow, and thrive—together.

Wherever you are in your journey—whether you’re an individual educator looking for support or a district leader working to create systemic change—I’d love to help you find clarity, build strong teams, and create lasting impact. Let’s work together to make education better for everyone.

She has a deep understanding of coaching strategies and professional growth, but what sets her apart is her ability to make learning both accessible and impactful. Her relatable style creates an environment where people feel empowered, valued, and inspired to grow.

Working with Sue is not just about gaining new strategies—it’s about feeling seen, heard, and motivated to become the best coach possible. I highly recommend her to anyone seeking an expert coach who truly understands the heart of education.”

Stephanie Seidel, Director of Instructional Services, CESA4

“I have had the privilege to work with Sue Schirmer for over 15 years. I appreciate her ability to analyze data that allows the opportunity to look at the big picture, but also the small details. Sue is able to help direct and facilitate thinking about data in a way that makes sense and applying that data to improve practice. As a school counselor, her guidance has allowed me to rethink my practices and always strive to be better.

Her guidance and feedback is relatable to all aspects of a school and always rooted to make sure our practices will foster the best out of our students.”

Dr Casey McMurray, School Counselor, Bondurant–Farrar Community School District

“I’ve known Sue and have been fortunate to benefit from her mentorship for over 15 years.

An exceptional statewide leader, Sue possesses the remarkable ability to grasp the big picture while also excelling at individual coaching; she is passionate advocate who will “tell it like it is”. Her leadership and advocacy skills have led to the advancement of a number of key initiatives in school counseling in Iowa, including the Iowa School Counselor Evaluation Supplement; the Iowa School Counseling Framework; and Counselor Academy – a professional learning opportunity uniquely designed for school counselors. Sue’s life work has led to a greater understanding of the role of the school counselor, and better alignment of school counseling programs with the ASCA National Model for school counseling; ultimately these efforts result in better outcomes for students.”

Aimee Hospodarsky, School Counselor Consultant, Grant Wood AEA

Sue’s unwavering guidance, support, and resourcefulness have been invaluable to my peers and me, particularly in the areas of school counseling programming, MTSS, and cognitive coaching.

She is truly an expert in education, earning a well-deserved reputation for excellence in performance, responsiveness, and leadership.

Beyond the formal training and professional development in which I’ve engaged with Sue, she has been a trusted thought partner—challenging my thinking, refining my approach, and ultimately helping me grow as a leader and coach. Her facilitation skills stand out, demonstrating not only her organization and expertise but also her ability to engage participants actively, ensuring they leave with clear, actionable steps. Sue’s impact on individuals and teams is profound, consistently guiding them from their current state to where they aspire to be. I give Sue my highest recommendation to anyone seeking to embrace improvement!
